With the world turning digital, coding is becoming a necessary skill, alongside maths and reading. However, pupils are not getting the opportunity to learn about computer science and coding, because it rarely gets taught in school.

Using digital devices in school can help teachers with teaching the subject to students from the age of 9 – 14 years. Apple and Google both have fantastic facilities within their devices or app store to help teachers and students on their knowledge of coding.

Being taught computer science schools gives all students the skillset, confidence and ability to prepare them for the future. Google for education offer a CS (computer science) First curriculum that anyone can teach. Therefore, allowing teachers with no background knowledge to teach students. There is step by step lesson plans, tutorials activities and resources. The program is ideally made for 9-14-year olds of all experiences and interest. They get taught to collaborate core computer science concepts, to create their own project.

Grasshopper App

It is common across all students between 9 – 14 to have a handheld device either a mobile or tablet. The beginner coding app grasshopper is an on the go way to learn the fundamentals of coding in as little as 5 minutes a day. This is a great app to set as afterschool study and homework. The resources available include fun lessons, and visual puzzles.

Swift playgrounds

An application created by apple to support the learning of coding and computer science fundamentals. You don’t need to have any coding knowledge, just the passion to learn. The resources include puzzle solving. The aim is to guide a character through a 3D world whilst using real code.
