Remote learning for schools – How can edde help you?
It has been a challenging year for schools across the UK with the emergence of COVID-19 and its rapid spread. However, it has been fantastic to see schools rising to the challenge and adapting their curriculum to provide remote digital learning to their pupils. On the 22nd October it became a new legal duty for schools to provide remote learning.
Firstly, edde would like to praise all the schools and teachers involved that have delivered access to high quality remote education resources in such a short period of time. Edde are privileged to have been perfectly positioned to support schools in their mission. However, there is still lots of work to be done and progress to be made.
It is very possible that the upcoming year will require more distant teaching for schools across the UK. Therefore, it is vital that your school has everything in place and is gathering feedback from teachers, pupils and parents.
1-1 remote digital learning schemes
Edde have been supporting schools in providing remote learning with digital devices for several years. Our 1-1 remote digital learning schemes combined with our digital device leasing options allows schools to implement this technology without having to invest large sums upfront. It was great to see that some schools were already well positioned to adapt to a complete remote learning schedule using our 1-1 digital device schemes. It is our passion to allow every child the opportunity to access a handheld device. Whether this is to be used at home or in the classroom. Our passion very recently became a necessity but allowed schools to experience the benefits that remote learning and using digital devices can have.
What have schools discovered?
Of course, everyone wants to see pupils back in the classroom; learning/socialising together and this is slowly becoming reality. Over seven million children and young people returned to the classroom in September. However, there have been some interesting discoveries as to some of the benefits that pupils have experienced from remote learning and using digital devices.
Remote learning
It has encouraged students to take more ownership of their work and develop some self-discipline. Time management skills become even more important even if they are being supported by parents. Learning outside the classroom has opened students’ eyes as to how it can be an effective environment to work in. With students no longer confined behind a desk, the possibilities for bringing learning to life and establishing real-world links are endless.
Digital Devices
The use of digital devices for students has a range of benefits and this is now being highlighted. It has enabled a more personalised learning experience to be delivered with the help of learning programmes and educational software. This educational software, for example ‘MyMaths’ provides constant feedback from content-embedded assessment and adaptive learning. The teachers can track results alongside the student who can track progression which helps improve motivation and ownership.
It is likely that when we see all students back in the classrooms, the use of digital devices and remote learning will be carried forwarded. Even more schools will look to implement this within the curriculum. This notion is being supported by the government, who are helping schools deliver remote education. On the 1st October, the government announced an additional 100,000 laptops to be made available for those children most in need. This is on top of the 200,000 laptops already provided. It is great to see the government supporting remote learning through digital devices and recognising the impact this can have.
